“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” -Matthew 25:40
In 2010, one of our parishioners visited northern Uganda, an area now well-known internationally for being the epicenter of conflict between the Ugandan government and a rebel group called the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) led by Joseph Kony. There in the town of Gulu a number of Orthodox churches and schools have began to grow as more Ugandans embrace Orthodoxy. One such parish is St. Basil’s, served Fr. George Lakony, a mission priest who is sponsored by the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC). Through OCMC’s ongoing Support a Mission Priest project, Fr. George is also able to serve as a parish priest in the rural village of Akonyibedo outside of Gulu. Having met Fr. George and seen first-hand the difficult challenges ahead for the community our parishioner felt the urge to financially assist in any way he could. From that fateful trip onward, Sts. Peter and Paul has partnered with Fr. George to establish a Scholarship fund for children to attend and finish school.
Our parish has set a goal to send financial assistance three times per year, and so far has sent on average $1,200 per term, or about $3,600 annually. The cost per student per term is around $50, and so even our small parish has managed to help a great number of students complete their education. Please prayerfully consider supporting the Uganda Scholarship Fund at Sts. Peter and Paul by sponsoring a student for each term, your contribution has eternal impact on the lives of our Ugandan brothers and sisters in Christ.
